The Situation
* In Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia's capital city (pop 1.5 million) there are about 300,000 chronic alcoholics, both male and female. Many of them simply pass out in the streets, in alleys, abandoned buildings or where the are standing. Ulaan Baatar is the world's coldest capital city with 8 month long winters.
The Heroes
The UB Police Department rescues, on any given night, an average of 200 passed out drunks or 6000 each month of which 1200 are young women. They are taken to a warm place and held for 24 hours, allowed to sober up and are fed before release. In short, these policemen rescue and save the lives of 6000 men and women, each month or almost 50,000 each winter.
They go above and beyond and are true heroes for the care they show in rescuing these people. On the down side, during the 2014-15 winter, despite their best efforts, 150 alcoholics have already frozen to death.
